UGA Coastal Explorations to Wassaw Island
On April 4th, we had the amazing opportunity to head down to the Wassaw National Wildlife Refuge with the UGA Marine Extension team. We spent the day exploring Wassaw, one of Georgia’s undeveloped barrier islands, looking for shells, learning about the landscape and its wildlife, and using a seine net to identify sea creatures.
Wassaw National Wildlife Refuge serves as an important link in the chain of barrier islands that lie along the Atlantic Flyway, providing an important habitat for a variety of migratory birds. The island has very little development and the refuge is one of the most pristine on the eastern seaboard. Wassaw Island is only accessible by boat.
While Wassaw isn’t Gray’s Reef, the two are interconnected and share tons of marine organisms, like crabs, dolphins, and plenty of invertebrates. The day was a huge success, and we loved the chance to spread out into our community.
